Last Wednesday at the POA meeting,  a board member expressed a concern that participating on more than one committee can create a conflict of interest, specifically with respect to project funding. A majority of the board voted that POA Board members and at-large members only be allowed to serve on one POA committee.

In my opinion, this perceived conflict is very minimal as committees do not vote on disbursement of funds. Those decisions are made at the board level only. Committees serve at the pleasure of the board and only offer recommendations.

There are several neighbors impacted by this vote, also offering specific technical experience needed by the POA on multiple committees and willing to volunteer their time. This vote created an issue on multiple committees now lacking specialized skillsets from committee members kicked off their committees. For example, my husband (Wayne Green) has experience and can offer a lot of introspective in some of the short term and long-term issues the board faces specifically with the Finance, Common Property and Architectural Review committees. These committees intertwine and involve some of our largest issues. Having the ability to sit on all three committees will allow better insight and problem solving.

Please join me in urging the board to reconsider their decision to exclude volunteers from multi-committee participation. The new Florida HOA law effective 7/1/24 states; any member can attend board or committee meetings. In our bylaws there is no limit to number of members in a committee and no limit of committees a member/neighbor can participate in.
