Why You Should Care

Dear Concerned,

My name is Vida Zelenkovic, proud grandmother and devout follower of Saint George, originally from Osijek, now living in Canada. I am writing this letter to share my concern on the subject of gay marriage, coming from a place of deep faith and cultural background.

In my belief, deep in my Serbian heritage and Christian faith, marriage is sacred bond between man and woman. This is not just religious belief but foundation of family as we know it. Having raised a family, with daughter and grandchildren, I see family as essential part of society, needing protection and traditional values to thrive.

Understanding of homosexuality in my view, influenced by my background and beliefs, sees it not fitting into this. It is very difficult topic, but I feel it is important to say, thinking of it as a form of mental illness and considering it as degeneracy. This opinion is not to harm or disrespect, but comes from my understanding and concern, especially about children's upbringing and influence around them.

I work in Royal York Hotel as banquet server and also have work as social media consultant. This gives me chance to meet many different people and see many views. But my belief stays strong that marriage should stay as tradition defines it.

I am asking respectfully for consideration of policies that keep traditional marriage definition. Canada, my new home, is known for inclusivity and respect for diversity. I hope my views, even if different, are received with same respect. I do not wish to take away rights or dignity from anyone, only to stand for traditions that are important to many of us.
