Dear Senator Dolan,
As parents and supporters of students at a new community school in Ohio, we are writing today to ask for you to expand support for high quality community schools and provide more school options for Ohio families.
Our children are current students at Cincinnati Classical Academy, a community school that opened in 2022 in partnership with Hillsdale College with an enrollment of 457 students – to our knowledge, the largest community school opening in Ohio’s history. As a Hillsdale College K-12 Member School, Cincy Classical uses a K-12 curriculum developed and licensed by Hillsdale, and also receives instructional support and oversight, professional development, board training, and best practices guidance from the college.
Hillsdale’s American Classical Curriculum is based on the canon of Western Civilization with use of tried-and-true methods such as explicit phonics and grammar, teacher-led instruction, and reliance on primary sources. The school’s mission is “to develop the minds and nourish the hearts of our students through a content-rich curriculum in the classical liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in moral character and civic virtue.” The demand for this type of education has been resounding, with more than 1000 applications received for enrollment in Cincinnati Classical Academy’s second year.
Through the budget process, you have an opportunity to enable and expand the success of schools like Cincinnati Classical Academy, and to meet the demands of parents across the state who want their children to have high quality education options. Specifically, lawmakers can expand eligibility for the Quality Community School Support Fund to include community schools that partner with institutions of higher education, like Hillsdale College, to implement curricula, methods, and governance practices that have been proven to be successful – “high quality” – in other states.
Expanding the eligibility of this fund will assure these schools have the necessary monetary support at the outset to hire the high quality teachers they attract, to secure facilities and allow expansion, and to develop rigorous academic programs that support students’ educational needs.
We ask that you please consider supporting Senator Jerry Cirino’s amendment (SC0642), which will help align Ohio law and funding to better meet community demand for high performing schools.

The best and most important education I received was without a doubt my classical studies. My grandson was bored out of his mind by 3rd grade in his previous public school. I previously taught in the public school system, and I wish the schools where I taught had been set up like this—as well as where my children attended. The curriculum is fabulous! I know the books each grade will study for each and every year! We can have family discussions about these classics and make connections with three generations— unlike previous schools where each grade or teacher arbitrarily selected books—some very obscure and inappropriate! The brain is stretched with copying and reciting poetry! Classical art is hung on the walls—brought to the attention of both students and parents via announcements and emails. Physical education happens each and every day! Art and music alternate with the children learning things in these classes that so impress both my husband and myself— that we regret that we did not have this kind of educational experience! The head master greets every student every day at the door as they enter the building! The announcements include riddles/ brain teasers! There is an assembly every Wednesday with some type of talent demonstrated—from music, poetry reciting, gymnastics, and more. Our three grandchildren will be together through high school—not 3 different buildings— each with different principles, teachers, newsletters, and multiple emails to keep up with….. I could easily add many more details, but the bottom line: This school should be the model for all of our schools. It has been the answer to our prayers and beyond on so many levels! It has revived my belief that education for our children can be of high quality with joy in learning and high standards for being role models for society!!! Please support our school! —so much bang for every buck that is used so wisely!!!

Our children have attended Cincinnati Classical Academy and really enjoyed their first year. What is different about this school is that the teachers teach to help shape and form young minds. They are not teaching to help the students pass a standardized test. The passion each of the teachers has is amazing. We are seeing both sides of our children’s brains being challenged. They are also taught to appreciate art and nature. Finally, the children are not only graded academically, but also on a set of virtues. Possessing the virtues of justice, perseverance, humility, courage, gratitude, prudence and compassion are character formations we see lacking in the world today. To have this taught at a young age will allow these children to change the world for good.

Many young people today are ignorant, cannot think critically, etc. largely through no fault of their own. How can these people then become responsible citizens? I am a parent of 3 students at Cincinnati Classical Academy which will benefit from the passage of this amendment. Classical has had a strong opening, offering academic rigor and a wonderful community for over 450 students. The school has been able to “do more with less” due to its strong model, excellent leadership and staff, and committed community of families.. Still, the school will benefit greatly from additional funding. Students at Classical are as deserving of this funding as every other student in the state. The kind of education that is occurring at Classical and other high quality community schools will be a credit and benefit to the state of Ohio in the long run.

Watching my grandchildren love to go to school again in a friendly no bully atmophere has been a blessing! The teachers are so well trained, so caring, and not beholden to a public school teacher union. The teachers eat lunch with the kids, go to recess with the kids and use every opportunity possible to teach and model virtues. When the kids come home from school, they will often speak of how they were recognized as being courageous, or prudent, or humble etc. Our kindergartener can recite the Preamble to the Constitution! Where else does this happen? Our society is being lost to the real meaning of debate and civility. These skills are taught everyday at Cincinnati Classical, and we are so appreciative!
Every child, family and parent should have an equal right and opportunity to educate their child as they wish and should be financially supported fairly. It is not right for the government to pick and choose who gets to go where because of their control of who gets funded. Not every child learns the same and need’s opportunities to become the best version of themselves. Offering more funding with less governmental control is what great equality and fairness that Americans deserve. We Americans want charter school options and we want the right to educate how we think is best for each individual child in our family.

The quality of education Cincinnati Classical Academy is providing is the highest we have encountered in Cincinnati across public, private and Catholic schools. There is a significant educational gap here that Cincinnati Classical Academy is now addressing. The impact they are having on kids and families across so many zip codes is truly amazing. How they are doing this with a quarter to half of the funding of these schools is, quite frankly, astonishing. Given their structure and mission to truly educate and enable real learning for kids, what they could potentially then do with additional funding is limitless. Amending the bill to expand eligibility for the Quality Community School Support Fund would be the best decision the Ohio Senate could make, as it will enable investment in future leaders that will positively impact Ohio. Cincinnati Classical Academy can be used as a beacon to show how schools should be looking to provide a quality education for children here in Ohio. Enabling funding to grow this further and impact even more people in Ohio, will be the best decision you make this year.
This school has had an amazing impact on our child, both academically and socially. It not only provides our student (and all its students) with an excellent education, but a genuine sense of community. As well as instills a strong sense of core values.

Cincinnati Classical is a truly back to basics educational experience for kids. While low tech, this school focuses on true phonics education, grammar, high level Singapore math thinking and classical literature that made America great! There is focus on history, civics, and community that is missing in public schools. These kids days are spent learning for the sake of learning, not to pass a state test. There is order and discipline as taught through daily virtue education. This school is what all Ohio public schools should be, but we are blessed to have this school in our community!
Cincinnati Classical offers an outstanding curriculum in a nurturing environment. The knowledge gained in the last year is immeasurable- from art history to Singapore math to literacy and Latin root-words. Cincinnati Classical has been a wonderful environment for learning.

School choice is important. A low technology approach in education has multiple studies supporting its validity and better outcomes for students. Behavior issues can be directly tied to technology addiction. Get it out of young childrens hands. It does not drive a understanding in STEM, it drives addiction and consumerism.

We pay a great deal in taxes yet the public schools are not prospering. I’ve paid for private education for my four children for decades. My youngest now attends Cincinnati Classical Academy and is receiving a superb education. Expanding eligibility to charter schools is a logical and fair use of tax dollars. These charter schools are exceeding their counterpart public schools categorically and doing so with less funding. Providing these schools with more of our tax dollars to continue putting out exceptionally educated children only makes sense. More money should follow the child instead of restricting the dollars to the closest public school.

This school has proved to be an excellent fit for our son. The curriculum is rigorous and stimulating. He enjoys a well-rounded approach to education in the liberal arts and sciences as a 6th grader. He and his friends challenge themselves with enrichment activities outside of the classroom. At the end of his first year, he and his friends have accepted the headmasters challenge to spend 400 hours this summer outside and away from screens! This school will return tenfold on the investment we're requesting. Thank you!
